About OAM Sports Academy -
Sports Academy is part of Out of Africa Missions (OAM) which a non-profit, non-denominational, Christ-centred missions organisation that exists to be a catalyst for change in people’s lives.
The OAM Sports Academy launched in January 2008 and is situated in George, in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Our students join us after school at the local sports stadium, we provide them with a small meal, followed by Christian teaching and a life skills session. Then they break off into specialist sports coaching in rugby, football or netball. We hope that the students will gain self esteem and a sense of achievement and belonging through being involved in the Sports Academy as well as hopefully going on to excel in their chosen sport.
Last year we had 35 children that participated in the programme, all of which were selected from the five township schools in George. Each year we hope to take on another group of 35 and increase our numbers. It is hoped that the children will be with us for 5 years while they are in secondary school.
How will Bike Africa funding help – One of our biggest problems is transportation. Presently we use 2 pickup trucks, for multiple runs, where the children climb into the back. This system is a drain on our finances and time, however it is the only one available to us. We are hoping Bike Africa can help us to raise money for a 32 seater school bus which would enable us to collect the children in one go.
